Summer Camp 2020

On April 25, 2020 a meeting-by-proxy was held of Camp Pitt’s Membership board. At that meeting the Membership unanimously approved the Camp Pitt Board of Directors’ recommendation to indefinitely postpone all 2020 summer camp programs and scheduled events until such a time as the Board may determine at their discretion.

Why is it necessary to postpone 2020 summer camp?

The impact of the COVID-19 health emergency is currently unfolding all over the world. Many organizations, including camps, are feeling its effects both directly and indirectly. Camp Pitt is one such organization. Planning summer camp under normal circumstances involves carefully balancing a number of unknowns. The response to COVID-19 in Virginia makes summer camp almost impossible to adequately plan and conduct. There is no way of knowing how long the current orders regarding social distancing and closed businesses will be in place, what restrictions may follow in the re-start, how families will respond when restrictions are lifted, whether staff and volunteers will be available, and what the financial impacts will be to camper households and supporting churches. As a result of this added uncertainty, our leaders determined Camp Pitt could not safely and effectively offer programming that satisfies the needs of our camper families and stay on track to accomplish our mission over the long term.

Does “indefinitely postpone” mean cancelled? Could there still be summer camp?

In this case “indefinitely postpone” does mean cancelled. However, the Board of Directors wanted to allow for the possibility of some type of camp-like event to occur if the social distancing restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so according to the Virginia Department of Health. In the event that a camp event is planned, we will communicate that through the website, email, social media and US Mail to everyone on our mailing list.

What if I already registered? Will I get a refund?

If you have already registered, your fees will be refunded. Registrations received through the website will be refunded to the credit card used for the original transaction. Checks received in the office will be returned.

Will there be a JC retreat?

Unfortunately, we will not be having a Junior Counselor training retreat this year.

Does the cancellation of summer camp 2020 mean Camp Pitt is in danger of closing permanently?

Camp Pitt has always existed on the abundant provision of the Lord Jesus Christ through the generous giving of member churches, individual donors, and supporting congregations. We will continue to do so. As with most organizations, we have significantly revised our budget for the remainder of 2020. Our goal is to remain financially sound in anticipation of coming back better than ever in 2021. If you are in a position to make a donation to help see us through, please do it! In the meantime, remember to give to your local church.
